12 things not to miss in New Zealand

New Zealand is one of the most beautiful countries I have been to. You could drive a 10 miles and be met with a different landscape than where you just come from. Rolling green hills, beaches, fjords, mountains and so much more to feast your eyes on. If you have ample time, then I suggest a cheeky road trip around the North and South island, especially the south. But if you're short on time, then I recommend not to miss the following 12 highlights of this kiwi land.

1. Milford Sound

Judged as New Zealand's most famous/popular tourist destination in some survey or another and quite rightly so. Not only is the drive to Milford Sound, a beauty in itself, but these fjords are spectacular. Pick a boat trip - and there are many to choose from but all sail the same route - and marvel at the mountainous Fiordland National Park. Enjoy waterfalls, seal colonies and a view that looks as if you could sail off the end of the earth.

Exploring New Zealand’s North Island

Even though New Zealand isn’t a big country, especially compared to its gigantic neighbour Australia, don’t let that fool you in thinking that there isn’t a great deal to see and do in the land of Kiwis. The country is nicely split into the two main islands, so conveniently named the North and the South Island. So far, I’ve only visited the north but I found there weren’t as many blog posts out there on a decent itinerary to follow. The south is easy, as you can pretty much just do a big loop, but the north is a bit trickier. Therefore, I’ve detailed my one three week road trip itinerary of the beautiful green north island.

Auckland – days 1-3

Seems like a good place to start? The busiest and most populated city in New Zealand. Some people really don’t like Auckland, so maybe just start here and set yourself a good base before setting out on the open road. Also, Auckland is a good place to buy a car as the city is full of backpackers.
But when not car searching or twiddling your thumbs, then take a gander at the likes of Mount Eden, Auckland Art Gallery and Auckland Museum, which is a really decent museum and worth a few hours of your time!

The Essential New Zealand Packing List

New Zealand pretty much is the country of nature, glorious views, incredible outdoor activities and of course, hobbits. When countries like this are added to the backpacking list then you might need to adapt a few of your typical packing essentials to make your trip work. I've been in the land of Kiwis for other two months and I've got a pretty good idea on what I should have brought and what I've definitely needed...
